NSWD Expedition 2010 update

For those of you who are able to read the Dutch language, you can find an article about our North Sea Wreckdivers expedition 2010 at the following website: www.northseawreckdivers.nl

Diving time

Tomorrow, weather permitting off course, it’s diving time again. Together with some divers from “Stichting Koe” we are going to make two wreckdives on the North Sea.

At this moment the weather seems to be in our favour… so let’s hope for some good visibility. Which wrecks we are going to dive is not sure at this moment. As soon as we know more, we will update this post.

Update:

We made a really nice dive on the Tubantia. It was great… nice waves, enough wind and the visibility was around 2 meter… a few goodies came up, but nothing special.

NSWD Expedition 2010

Last week we went diving again… this time our yearly live aboard on the North Sea with Martin Bakker and the MS Dolfijn. The weather wasn’t that good at the start…  so we set sail two days later. Because of the weather we came home one day earlier too.

In total we have made only two dives, but they were really great dives… dive one… an unknown wreck… we still need to find out what this ship is called. Dive two was on the HMS Aboukir. Although we didn’t made the number of dives we would have wanted… we still had a very nice week and we even got some goodies (see photo).

MV Christiaan Huygens

Tomorrow it’s diving time again. This time we are going wreck diving near the Dutch coast on a wreck called the MV Christiaan Huygens.

The Dutch passenger carrier MV Christiaan Huygens weighed 16.287 Brt and was build in 1928. The ship has been used during World War 2 by the allied forces as a troop-transport vessel. This way the ship made 261.000 miles. During the summer of 1945, the ship was revised at Antwerp and should go to Rotterdam to pick up a bunch of children for a stay in a foreign country. On August 26th 1945, the ship ran in to a mine at the Steendiep. Water was running in the engine room and deck 1. The damage was substantial. To prevent that the ship sank, it was stranded on the South-Steenbank. Unfortunate, on September 5th 1945, the hull broke and all recovery attempts were stopped.

Update: it was a very nice day, good weather (a bit windy), nice people, poor visibility but in the end some goodies came to the surface (some dinnerplates, a spoon, some tiles and a porthole).

North Sea Wreckdivers

Yesterday we have been wreckdiving on the North Sea. The day started really early (alarmclock was set at 03:15 hours) and we went to sea at 05:30 hours.

After a few hours we came to our first destination, de Vecht. This ship was attacked by the German u-boat U-14. The dive was very nice, good visibility, lots of fish and a few goodies we brought to the surface.

The second dive was originally planned at the HMS Simoon, but we decided we would rather make a dive at the S.S. Tubantia. Unfortunatelly I missed the shot and had a lot of trouble with my right ear, so I decided not to go down for a second try. The rest was already at the bottom and the visibility was great. This time a lot of goodies came to the surface.

After the second dive we went back to shore again and after a good meal (french fries), we went home. It was a long day, but a very nice day, great people, ‘friendly’ captain and good dives… what would we want more?
